Europe’s largest coastal lifesaving competition stops in Landes: discover this must-see event

The beaches of Capbreton and Hossegor are gearing up to pulse to the rhythm of the largest European coastal lifesaving gathering. On August 1 and 2, the Landes coast will see 450 athletes from 14 countries compete in a sporting event where performance goes hand in hand with maritime safety.

Oceanperf Challenge 2026: the elite of sea rescue takes over the Landes coast

Sixteenth edition, fifteenth year in existence: the Oceanperf Challenge confirms its status as a benchmark event. Between the Capbreton bunker and Hossegor’s North Jetty, the natural arena will offer a unique combination: shifting sandbars, powerful currents, and punchy shore breaks—perfect for testing the lifesavers’ understanding of currents.

Detailed program: two days of non-stop sporting events

The meticulously timed schedule ensures continuous action, from the first buoy to the final sprint on the sand.

  • Saturday, August 1 : team check-in at noon, captains’ briefing at 12:45 p.m., followed immediately by Surf Ski, Ironwoman/Ironman, and the mixed Taplin relay starting at 1:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, August 2 : board events get underway at 8:30 a.m., with Surf Ski semifinals and Beach Flags heats, not to mention a triple Swim/Board/Beach Flags format reserved for the U14s.
  • Finals starting at 2 p.m.: the moment of truth for Open Board, Surf Ski, Iron, and Beach Flags specialists.

Four key disciplines under the spotlight

Each sporting event has its own codes; here’s a quick overview.

Discipline Objective Key skill
Surf Ski Round two buoys, then sprint to the sand Swell reading + paddling power
Rescue Board Quick 600 m round trip Explosiveness at takeoff
Ironman/Ironwoman Combining swimming, ski, board, and beach run Mixed endurance
Beach Flags Elimination in a short sprint on the sand Pure reflexes & speed

Beyond the stopwatch: first aid and surf culture come together

The competition isn’t just about medals. The workshops led by Water Social Club remind us of the place of first aid in the daily lives of Landes lineups: reviewing external bleeding protocols, using a portable defibrillator… all free workshops for groms and seniors.

Veterans’ voices: when experience speaks

Sophie Kalin, the 2018 winner, highlights “the strength of the rip current at high tide.” Meanwhile, Luka Berri, trained through the Capbreton youth exchange program, mentions the importance of a clean glide when retrieving the leash in the shore-break zone. This feedback highlights that maritime safety remains the common thread behind every performance.

Practical information: preparing for your weekend at the beach

Between heats, it’s time to chill, but always stay safe.

  1. Park on the Estacade side before 10 h: easier access and a free shuttle to the spot.
  2. Bring a short-john wetsuit in case thermal conditions cause the water temperature to drop.
  3. Respect the neutral zone: no drones are allowed above the athletes’ course.
  4. Try demo boards from the shapers in the exhibitor village, ideal for getting a feel for the new rescue hulls.
  5. End the day at the “Future of beach safety” sunset talk hosted by the organizers of the upcoming French Championships.

Is there an admission fee?

No, access to the beach and natural grandstands remains free to promote maritime rescue culture among the general public.

Can you register for first-aid workshops on the day?

Yes, subject to availability; a dedicated booth opens every morning at 9 h near the lifeguard station.

Are dogs allowed in the competition area?

Only if kept on a leash and outside the race lane, to ensure competitors’ safety.

What is the best time to watch the Ironman?

The Iron finals start on Sunday at around 14 h 30, right when the central sandbar produces a more hollow wave, making the board-to-shore transition more dynamic.

Is a weather postponement possible?

The protocol allows for a maximum six-hour delay in the event of a sudden thunderstorm, but the event will remain scheduled for the weekend thanks to manageable swell windows.
